I've self-published a lot of cool mini-comics, and even a coloring book! You can order them online from my other website, newlevant.com
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
I’m helping Jesse Reklaw on his graphic novel Couch Tag, coming out from Fantagraphics this fall. It’s a dysfunctional family drama, which is just my kind of comic! Left are my pencils based on his thumbnails, and right is the page after he’s gone to town on it.
New mini-comic: Mariposa! A collaboration with Jesse Reklaw about butterfly collecting and sexual fluidity. Read the tale of Isaac as he pursues the mysterious new terranovis species, while fending off the psychosexual advances of his weird neighbor.
It’s based on the old Mariposa, but totally revamped, with a new silkscreened cover, and expanded to 40 pages. 40 pages?! Holy cow, that’s the longest single comic I’ve ever done!
I’ll be selling Mariposa at the Brooklyn Zine Fest (tomorrow) and Stumptown (next weekend) for $8.
I’m reprinting my mini-comic Mariposa for the Brooklyn Zine Fest and Stumptown. It’s printed in the shape of a butterfly, and it’s about a butterfly collector, and it’s gonna be incredible! Here’s some preview art, expertly cleaned up and toned by Jesse Reklaw.
Hi! I’m stoked to present my thesis comic, If This Be Sin, based on the life of Gladys Bentley. It’s for sale on Gumroad! You can download the 16 page full-color PDF for $2.
Gladys Bentley, was a blues singer, piano player, and drag king who performed bawdy tunes in Harlem nightclubs throughout the 1920s and ’30s. Despite the social obstacles she faced as a black, openly queer woman, her outrageous and energetic act became a mainstay of the Harlem cabaret. In 1952, under the oppressive social conditions of the McCarthy era, Bentley publicly renounced her previous identity and claimed to have found happiness as a feminine housewife.
Gumroad is super simple to use, you just have to enter your credit card number and you’ll be sent a direct download, plus Gumroad will email you a link to re-download it if you ever lose track of the file.
FOR EVERY 100 NOTES, I’LL GIVE AWAY A DIGITAL COMIC TO A RANDOM TUMBLR USER so please share if you can! (Within each 100 notes, only people who reblog are eligible for a free copy.)
Thank you and I hope you enjoy the comic!
My new poster! I’ll have it for sale at MoCCA, come check it out at D108!
I’ve finished If This Be Sin, the junior thesis comic I’ve been hard at work on all year! It’s about Gladys Bentley, a Harlem Renaissance blues singer and drag king.
The original watercolored pages will be on display as part of the thesis show at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 W 26th Street, 15th Floor, from April 6 - 20. There’s also reception on Wednesday, April 10, 6-8pm, and I’d love to see you there.
As for publishing the comic, I’m considering both print and digital options, and I hope to do it soon. I’ll keep everyone posted.
