Sellin' you wisdom from a plexiglass prism. I'm Hazel Newlevant, a cartoonist attending SVA.
I do weekly Concert Review Comix, and I've self-published a lot of cool mini-comics, and even a coloring book! You can buy them from my storenvy.

Preview panel from No It U Lover. It’s finished, hooray! Now I just have to do all the intermediary steps to actually publish it. I’ll be reading No It U Lover at the Easter Sunday KGB Comix Night this Sunday, and all are welcome.
Never done a reading before… scary! But I can’t wait to show this comic to the world.

Here’s a preview of the portfolio comic I’ve been working on! Mazzucchelli said this was a good start.

The beginning of a comic I did for the Subcultures anthology, from Ninth Art Press. Look for it ‘round about SPX, I think?

I definitely wanna explore my unschooler nerd childhood more in future comics.

Hazel Newlevant’s “Concert Review Comix”

Hazel Newlevant takes her sketchbook to shows around town and tries to capture the experience. This mini-comic collects the best Concert Review Comix so far, lovingly printed with rounded corners to look like a little black Moleskine.

Contains reviews of Hockey, Slutty Hearts, Awkwafina, Antwon, Le1f, Jeffrey Lewis, Quasi and more!

5.25″ x 8.25″, 24 pages. $6
Silkscreened cover with color interior

I plan to continue this series on newlevant.com soon! Until then, I’m really pleased with how this mini came together as a physical object.

Adventures at Burning Man, 2011, originally published in Curio Vol. 1.

I might not reprint Curio Vol. 1 any time soon (or ever?) but I’m still into this comic.

I just finished illustrating a booklet about powerhouse LGBT activist Kathleen Saadat, as part of the Comics for Change! series. These are some of my favorite pages.

If you’re in Portland, there’s a release party at Darcelle XV Showplace on December 12th. (I will not be in Portland.)

newlevant.com is now live!
I needed somewhere good to put the weekly concert review comix I’m starting. Why concert reviews? Because shows have so many wonderful variations—the sound, watching the musicians up close, the costumes (or lack thereof), dancing, camaraderie with the crowd, etc.—and I’m fascinated by trying to express it in a drawing.
If any music websites or magazines would like to pay me/give me free tickets/press passes, please be in touch. ;)
Also new: my portfolio has some diary comics that I’ve never put online before. (I asked my mom what she thought my funniest comics were, and she said those, so there you go.) And I made a Storenvy shop to sell my mini-comics.
